What Kind Of Review Can You Expect?

If I could describe what kind of reader I am, I would hands down say I was an emotional one. When I read I want to fully experience the book, from the emotions coursing through the characters to reacting to the twist and turns of the storyline. I'm looking for those books that fire up my imagination and leave me breathless when it's over. It's for this reason why the reviews I write aren't so much what I think and are more on how I feel. My hopes in sharing my review in this way is that something will spark an interest and have you wanting to have the same experiences. This isn't to say I don't have issues with grammar, word choices etc. Trust me I do and most times all it takes is waiting for the story to grab hold for it not to matter. When I do include things about what I thought about the book (for example I've included comments about word choices and being too descriptive), I only do so because it directly affected how I felt. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

To Conquer A Highlander by Mary Wine

To Conquer A Highlander
Mary Wine
Historical Romance / Highlander

A fierce Highland laird ready to kill for king and country... When Torin McLeren discovers his neighbor's plot against his king, he takes their daughter as his prisoner, thereby stopping her father's plot from going forward. But that leaves him with a woman under his roof whom he can't ignore, and not just because she's his enemy's daughter...

A woman who's as much trouble as she is temptation...
Shannon McBoyd decides to use her captor to experience passion for the first time, and then to destroy him. But her plan goes awry because once she has lured Torin into her bed, she no longer wants to hurt the one man who seems to value and understand her... Even if her father will kill him-and her-when he discovers what they've done...

Oh. My. Gosh. This is exactly why I love reading about Highlanders! I devoured this book and couldn't get enough, falling deeply in love with Torin and envious of Shannon. If there had've bee a way, I would've transported myself into this book and taken the role of the heroine because not only was in a great storyline but the highlanders, one in particular was completely swoonworthy. Unbelievably so. I'd gotten this book months ago when it was offered on Amazon for free and I've been kicking myself that it took me so long to get to. But better late than never - it really was amazing!

One of the things I love most about reading Highlander romance is that you always have a gutsy heroine that has no problem taking a stand and being completely fiesty. All the sassy goodness is usually  direct straight at the hero and it's a blast watching how they undergo a battle of wills. This book is no different as Shannon is taken hostage by Torin. After her family led a brutal attack against the McLeren's, as the clan Laird, Torin had no choice to take action. Shannon became a pawn in the battle but it doesn't take long before sexual tension and sparks begin to fly. Seeing the situation as hopeless, Shannon feels that her time with Torin is limited as an impending death sentence lingers over her head. What she doesn't realize is that what a Highlander steals, he keeps and Torin has no intention of giving her up. This is a great addition to the historical romance genre and one that will grip your heart to the end.
This is the first time with me reading something by Mary Wine and I loved the story she created. I will admit though, for me the writing became wordy at times and I was so engrossed in the relationship of Torin and Shannon, that I'd skip through the extra words. I didn't feel like I lacked for anything, still able to enjoy the story but it did leave me feeling a little guilty. There was great humor at different parts and I especially loved the ending. Once I was finished, I was left a little heated and recovering from the constant swoon I'd enjoyed. Even now, I get tingles and sigh over the book.

I loved the dynamics of the couple, the way they fought and gravitated against each other. Torin was truly magnificent - worthy of the adoration and addiction I have towards my beloved Highlanders. He was masculine, strong and opinionated and most of all, passionate. I love the protective nature he had and I got goosebumps everytime he claimed Shannon. I had no problem imagining that sexy Scottish brogue talking and if I was Shannon, I'd have jumped him the second he opened his mouth and spoke. He was uber sexy and I loved it!!

This is a must read for those who share my craving for Highlanders. Wordiness aside, the story was engrossing and it really plays with your heart. For those with loved ones, I'd hand them this book and say "See Torin, learn a thing or two" LOL I know you'll be thanking the author later *winks* Happy reading!

I have 3 of Mary Wine's books and am slowly getting the rest through Paperback swap, need to read them soon especially this one so I can "Tingle and Swoon Too"!

If you enjoy Highlanders and would like to start another series head over to the 99 cent sale at Amazon Kindle and pick up Paula Quinn's "Laird of The Mist" and fall in love with Callum and Kate Belinda!
