I was really curious about this book when I found it on Kindle and was more so when I realized it was a zombie story. Even though I love all things paranormal, I’ve pretty much stayed away from them because I couldn’t get the image of mindless people staggering around with their arms stretched out, body parts falling off. Not exactly a romantic image right?
So imagine my surprise and excitement when I meet Samuel Reed. Trust me when I say, this man definitely goes against everything I thought and has given the word zombie a whole new level of sexy. He is a man who when lying on the battlefield, his life draining away, is put under the influence of powerful magic that would curse him to an eternity of half life and hiding in the shadows. Hell bent on revenge, he spends his time hunting done the man who betrayed him, coming close on many occasions, only to be eluded. It was during one of these hunts that Samuel stumbles across Cassandra, the sister of a beloved friend and together they work at destroying their common enemy, falling in love and giving way to their passions along the way.
Cassandra was such a great character to read because when I think of the time period the story was set in, I have the idea that it was frowned on for a woman to assert herself and be independent. Cassandra doesn’t care for those expectations and joined with an organization that hunts down magical sources to protect them. I love how she had courage to face things that would have other women cowered but most of all I love her total acceptance of Samuel. She looked beyond what happened to him, saw into his heart and offered herself to him completely. It made for some wonderful dialogue between them as she kept reminding him that she didn’t see him as a monster. She proved to have a strong sense of integrity.
Samuel was incredible. Once I got past the fact of what he was, I was able to look deeper and I loved what I found. He was such an honorable man, having fought hard for those that served with him in the military and when he rose from the dead changed, it left him cold and empty. He had such a harsh image of himself and it got in the way of him fully accepting Cassandra’s love at first. He had a hard time believing that Cassandra saw beyond what he was so when he was able to push past it, it made for some very heated and steamy moments between them. I loved watching as the effects of Cassandra’s love melted something inside of him and how he finally felt hope and alive again. Reading his amazement touched my heart, his passion other places (ROFL) and it will be his face that I see now each time I think of zombies.
This was the first I’d read something by Zoe Archer so for me, reading an unknown is always a risk. I have to say that I loved her writing style and the way she was able to capture the moment between her characters. She wrote in a way that put me right there in the story and had me experiencing all moods I was reading. I’m definitely interested in reading more of her work.
This is a great book for everyone. If you love zombies? Read it. If you love sexy zombies? Oh heck yeah read it. If you love romance and passion? Hold on tight because this will definitely appeal to you. Happy reading!
